Tuesday, Re-Visit the World of Citizen Science with Emily Rice and Chuck Nice, Now Extended

Here on the StarTalk Podcast Network we try and bring as much science to you as possible. This week on StarTalk All-Stars, we re-visit Citizen Science, with Emily Rice in order to remind you how to further the frontiers of science yourself! All-Stars host Emily Rice and comic co-host Chuck Nice explore the world of citizen science with their guests, Dr. Karen Masters, Project Scientist for Galaxy Zoo and Professor at the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation at University of Portsmouth, and Jackie Faherty, Senior Scientist and Senior Education Manager in the Department of Astrophysics and Department of Education at the American Museum of Natural History.

This episode is now extended with Emily Rice and Chuck Nice answering more fan-submitted Cosmic Queries about citizen science and more. You’ll hear more about Zooniverse, a “people-powered” research platform we discuss in the original episode. For those who need a reminder:

“The Zooniverse enables everyone to take part in real cutting edge research in many fields across the sciences, humanities, and more. The Zooniverse creates opportunities for you to unlock answers and contribute to real discoveries.”

When this episode first came out I checked out Zooniverse and had a lot of fun helping identify penguins for Penguin Watch. Given that we were re-releasing this episode I thought I’d have a go once more. No surprise, it’s still fun! If you haven’t tried it out yet it’s definitely worth the time. They now offer even more fun things like “Shakespeare’s World” where you can “transcribe handwritten documents by Shakespeare’s contemporaries and help us understand his life and times”.

On the extension, you’ll also hear about the time Emily “broke” an observatory, whether or not there’s a wrong way to do citizen science, and why being a citizen is just as important to our society as being a scientist. All that, plus, we discuss the societal applicability of different sciences.

If you like hearing about citizen science, make sure to check out our other episodes on the topic: StarTalk Live! Citizen Science from San Francisco Part 1

and Part 2.

Please join us tonight for Extended Classic: Citizen Science, with Emily Rice at 7pm EDT right here on our website, as well as on our All-Stars channels on Apple Podcasts, Google Play Music, SoundCloud, Stitcher, and TuneIn. And if you’re an All-Access subscriber, you can watch or listen to this episode ad-free at 7pm, too.

That’s it for now. Keep Looking Up!
