About This Episode

“Will you donate your body to be stuffed and put on display (at the American Museum of Natural History)?” This is one of the many questions John Hodgman poses to Neil during their monumental meeting of minds. From the Mac vs. PC debate to “geeks versus jocks,” John and Neil provide more information than you require on the questions and challenges that face our age. Astrophysicist Charles Liu sits in the co-host chair this week, and comments on areas far beyond his usual expertise.

I am SO sick of this apples & oranges (no pun intended) argument for Apple vs. PC. Apple has continued to keep this fan base of loyal customers who will never move to PC, mostly because they’ve never actually tried to use one for more than 10 minutes. Most power uses prefer an OS that is not closed to one-size-fits-all software built on hardware that you can only get from one source at whatever price Apple chooses because you don’t have a choice.

The term ‘Geek’ really means so many things to so many people now. You have your sci-fi nerd, your graphic design nerd, your music history nerd, computer nerd, video-game nerd who may or may not also be a computer nerd, etc. But to dumb it down to ‘the man of the past must be strong and the man of the future will MAKE A LOT OF MONEY?’ Really? I kind of took it as the person who will innovate and improve our quality of life. And very few of those people are in it for the money. Not to say that all nerds are completely selfless, but a drive within us to discover, be creative, and to be challenged on a daily basis far exceeds our desire for material wealth.

This is the second time I’ve heard Neil mention being buried to give back. The first thought I had was that it doesn’t work for everyone because most people have coffins designed to protect your body from just that event.

    • Give Back

I’m giving back by donating my body to a medical school. Bonus: it’s the only way I can afford to go to med school. 🙂
