Get “High on Nye” Sunday When Chuck Nice Grills The Science Guy

Bill Nye has been showing up on StarTalk ever since our first season, when his “Bill Nye Minutes” were one of our most popular recurring segments.

But it wasn’t until our host, Neil deGrasse Tyson, got busy filming Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, that Bill got his first shot as a guest host on the show, and we’ve all never looked back.

Ever since the infamous “Ham on Nye” debate where Bill defended the theory of evolution in the very heartland of Creationism, he’s become a highly visible champion of science against superstition. That role has only expanded with his NY Times Bestseller, Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation.

So it’s not surprising that when we recently asked you for Cosmic Queries specifically for The Science Guy, many of your questions had to do with evolution. Co-host Chuck Nice starts off what he refers to as the “High on Nye” Edition of Cosmic Queries with a question about the mechanisms of evolution, and Bill is off and running.

He explains why sex is an efficient evolutionary tool and what survival of the fittest really means. He dives into dominant and recessive genes, robust immune systems, germs and Kim Kardashian.

In order to answer a fans question about whether technology could lead to de-evolution, Bill talks about the time he might have died from appendicitis but was saved by science.

He discusses how “The Pill” enabled women to take control of their biology to the benefit of society.

But that’s just one side of Bill Nye.

You also asked questions for Bill Nye the engineer, who just happens to be the CEO of The Planetary Society. And while we’ve saved your questions for him about the Lightsail project for another episode, in this one Chuck asks Bill your questions about the human exploration of space, from where we should go next, to the dangers of the trip, to the problems plaguing the privately-funded Mars One project.

Oh yeah, and Bill answers a question about Leonard Nimoy’s contribution to science that includes Bill naming his favorite episode of Star Trek: The Original Series: “City on the Edge of Forever.” Hard to argue with that one, even if you are a Tribbles fan.
