If you follow our StarTalk Radio channel, you’ll have noticed that every Thursday we post an “In Case You Missed It” episode from our brand-new spin-off show Playing with Science. If you’ve had an inkling to check it out but never have, this is the week to do it.
On this week’s episode of StarTalk Radio, we’re bringing you the best sports science clips from the past two seasons of Playing with Science. Hosted by StarTalk fan-favorite Chuck Nice and former professional British footballer and broadcaster Gary O’Reilly, Playing with Science explores the intersectionality of sports and science with expert guests and interviews that dive deep into the sports you love. Chuck and Gary bring a palpable chemistry and passion to each episode, making Playing with Science the perfect one-stop-shop for sports and science nerds alike.
On this weeks’ Time Capsule, Playing with Science’s resident astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and Chuck guide us through the best moments as voted on by our fans. First, you’ll hear our top vote-getter, Martial Arts: Fight Like a Physicist where physics professor (and black belt) John Eric Goff breaks down the mechanics of Krav Maga and teaches us how to throw a mean punch.
After that, Neil, Chuck, and Gary go through Neil’s sports-related tweets in a segment from Out-of-this World Sports where our trio ponders what it would be like to hold the Olympics on Mars.” Neil pops up later in the episode to talk about the science behind basketball. You’ll also hear Neil’s interview with controversial cycling superstar Lance Armstrong from our episode, The Physics of the Tour de France.
Next, take a dip with NASA Oceanographer Bill Patzert as he illuminates the science behind big wave surfing. And last, but certainly not least, physicist Alain Haché explores the science behind hockey’s signature move – the slap shot.
