Episode Preview: “A Tribute to Neil Armstrong” – Sunday, 9-9-12 at 7 PM EST

I just finished listening to what you’ll be able to hear this Sunday night: “A Tribute to Neil Armstrong.” The episode is an interesting blend of fan questions and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson’s personal recollections celebrating the life of the NASA astronaut who was the first man to walk on the moon.

Among other stories, Neil describes how, when he was just 14 years old, he met Neil Armstrong on what has to be the coolest cruise ship journey of all time: to the coast of Africa to view a total solar eclipse. He also talks about attending the moving, private funeral service that took place, serendipitously, on the day of an actual “blue moon.”

Together with comic co-host Eugene Mirman, Neil answers your Cosmic Queries about Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11 from Google+, Twitter, Facebook, www.startalkradio.net and phone calls to our Cosmic Queries hotline at 1-800-474-1970.

It’s a unique episode of StarTalk Radio, and a fitting tribute to the humble NASA astronaut who enabled all of us to feel like we shared a little bit in one of the most momentous achievements in the history of all mankind.

I was hoping that Star Talk would do a Neil Armstrong tribute! This is great!

Do you think Armstrong should have done more with his public status? Later in his life he seemed to open up more. He helped write a letter to congress where he expressed his disapproval of NASA’s future plans. He even did an interview with, of all people, an Australian accountant. I wish he had done more of this kind of thing earlier so people would have known him better.

He was a good man who inspired me as a kid. I will miss him.

Jas, I think you’ll really enjoy the episode. Neil addresses some of what you just discussed.

  • Kevin

Looking forward to this show but cannot seem to find it at 7 as stated.

    • Jeff

Yes, Kevin, we’re still waiting for the final version to be delivered to us from the engineers. I apologize for any inconvenience. But I can assure you, it’s an episode worth the wait.

  • Eric Charland

Can’t wait so, hurry up guys ! 🙂

    • Jeff

It just went live a few minutes ago, Eric.

  • Great show. I love the idea of celebrating life as opposed to mourning a death. What is the name of the song played at the first break?
