It’s time for more upcoming events from members of the StarTalk Radio Cosmic Community. In this post, we’ve got news from the Southern Colorado Astronomical Society in Pueblo, CO, the Challenger Learning Center in Ramapo, NY, and news about ALCON 2013 from the Astronomical League. (Please check individual organization websites for specific details.)

The Southern Colorado Astronomical Society

Star Gaze at the Lake
July beginning at Dusk (about 8:30 PM)
Lake Pueblo State Park, in the parking lot of the Visitors Center

Join us as we take in the wonders of the night sky and share information about the objects we see: Planets of our solar system, the Moon, Double Stars, Nebulas, Star Clusters, Constellations, Galaxies.

The Starlight Express
Saturday July 13 and Sunday July 14

It’s the first Starlight Express of 2013! A steam engine train ride from yesteryear, aboard the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad for stargazing and camping at 9,200 feet. Join the Southern Colorado Astronomical Society on for a historic ride and an amazing view of the Colorado night sky.

August 10th and 11th

Climb aboard Steam Engine #18 for a thrilling ride up the pass to 9,200 feet for an evening of camping and stargazing with special guest, Edna DeVore. At the mountain retreat, Edna will speak of her experiences in the search for life beyond our solar system. Edna’s current passion is the space telescope Kepler, as it gazes for other planets in orbit around distant stars, hoping to find those that support life as we know it.

And if you enjoy Bluegrass and Country Music at its finest, take the early train to hear 8-time CMA award winner, 4-time Grammy winner, and Entertainer of the Year Ricky Skaggs live in concert. Enjoy a weekend of hearing and seeing the stars!

The Astronomical League

ALCon 2013
July 24 through July 27

The Astronomical League holds ALCon at the Fernbank Science Center in Atlanta. Our partner club is the Atlanta Astronomy Club (AAC) and we will be joined by annual meetings of the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers (ALPO) and of the Southeast Region of the Astronomical League (SERAL).

We estimate that 200 amateur astronomers, representing a wide range of interests and expertise levels, will attend: Beginners desiring to learn more; intermediates wanting to improve their knowledge and skill, and advanced amateurs participating in the leading edge of the art of observing. Since it is being held at a science center, the public will also be welcome.

More information can be found at: http://alcon2013.astroleague.org/.
