I’m sure I probably missed the episode where this was discussed, but if nothing can escape a black hole, then how come black holes have jets of gas shooting out of them?

Thanks for getting me excited about learning science again. Philosophy and science, though, could be symbiotic. There is actually discipine in philosopy called philosophy of science. Science is a good kind of explaination but there are other types. Historical, Economic, Psycological, and logical are but a few. And not all science is great; phrenology and astrology comes to mind. Kinds of science because they are repeatable, testable and we know what we would accept as disconfirming of the assertion of the astrologist or phrenologist. I’m not busting down the barn to get answers from those folks though. :)

Jeff on

Ace, I would hardly call Astrology a science. Superstition, yes, but science?

Jeff on

Jack, that’s a really great question. I’ll see if I can get you an answer from Neil.

Christian on

SHUT UP, WESLEY!
Seriously, can Wil Wheaton let anyone get a word in?

RE: Jack Denver
*Non expert explanation*
The jets of gas (polar jets) aren’t actually coming out of the black hole, they are from the accretion disk which surrounds the black hole. This is matter that has not yet crossed the event horizon and therefore can actually escape the pull from the black hole.
