New Frontiers for StarTalk Radio: Tumblr and Instagram

From our new Instagram page: Neil deGrasse Tyson and Brian Greene debunk a physics mistake from the movie, Gravity, with the help of Eugene Mirman, while astronaut Mike Massimino and comedian Michael Ian Black look on.

Today’s guest blog post is by Sarah Cotten, StarTalk Radio’s newest volunteer. She’s now managing our Pinterest channel, and has started a StarTalk Radio Tumblr and StarTalk Radio Instagram, too. They’re all works in progress, but if you’re so inclined, please check them out. And now, without further ado, meet Sarah:

You know what I think is cool? Science. I mean, I’m not exactly scientific myself, but who doesn’t enjoy listening to somebody speak passionately about what they do? I think that’s what drew me to StarTalk in the first place. Neil deGrasse Tyson reminded me of my high school physics professor: the kind of man that would throw himself into walls, pretending to be atoms, as long as it would help you understand what, exactly, he was trying to teach.

I never was very good at physics. All the math confused me too much. Luckily for me, listening to the podcast doesn’t involve getting graded at the end of a chapter!

Hi friends! You’re probably wondering who this is that’s usurped Jeff’s usual blog posts. I should probably introduce myself, right?

My name is Sarah Cotten, and I’m a new cog in the machine. To plagiarize myself: I’m a 30 something year old who’s way too emotionally invested with the lives of fictional characters, with a penchant for hot pink lipstick and the perfect cat eye liner. I’ve been with StarTalk Radio for about two months now, just long enough to take over Pinterest, start a Tumblr, and post exactly one photo on Instagram. Don’t worry, though. I’ve got a whole collection of wonderful photos just itching to be posted.

Have you been on our Pinterest lately? If you have, you may have noticed a few new boards – I’ve got a board titled “Star Fashion”, but don’t let the name fool you, readers! This isn’t just clothing and shoes… this board is where I put all the fun, geeky, sciencey apparel and decor that I find. Looking for a Christmas gift for the Trekkie in your life? There’s a Star Trek scarf on there. Know a person who loves to bake? Science Lab Cookie Cutters! And okay, I also repinned some gorgeous nail polish and a dress with the galaxy on it. I make no apologies. There’s a little bit for everybody here.

I also added two other new boards – “Science is Full of Puns” and “Science in Literature”. These are homes for all the silly jokes we find and all the great quotes people share.

Take some time to check out the new boards, maybe do a little repining, if something strikes your fancy.

Are you on Tumblr? No? Well you should be! The Tumblr is pretty new and just finding its feet, but I’m excited to start reblogging gifs of shuttle launches and photos of space. In fact, I’m just about to post a link to a theory on warp technology and NASA. Come follow me and talk to me! You can find us at http://startalkradio.tumblr.com/

If you have a smartphone and you aren’t on Instagram yet, well, I don’t know what to do with you, except maybe write up a very nice and detailed explanation on how Instagram works and why you should use it. But that’s for a different day. Instead, I’m just going to point you at @startalkradio on Instagram, where I’ll be posting photos with all sorts of hipster filters. Want a chance to see behind the scenes photos of Neil and his guests? This is the place for it. If you’re not already on Instagram, you can see our page here: http://instagram.com/startalkradio

I hope to see you all on one of our varied networking sites!
